Academic Computing & Media Services (ACMS) is equipped to support faculty who are creating online course content. ACMS can help faculty with both hybrid deliver content online in conjunction with classroom time, as well as completely online courses. As a result of ACMS’s involvement in the 2013 summer workshop on hybrid and online education, we have developed a suite of resources that are useful to faculty creating content delivered through the Internet.
Moving a course from the traditional classroom to a “flipped” or hybrid classroom or an online-only format presents many challenges. ACMS’s instructional designers are intimately familiar with the common hurdles of taking a course online. Their guidance makes it easy for faculty to transition an existing course and to an online format.
For course content videos that need to make an impact, ACMS offers a complete video production solution.
A common challenge in creating online videos is keeping them short enough to maintain student attention. ACMS offers professional script writing consultation services that will help keep the content concise and ensure that viewers remain engaged with the video.
ACMS’s greenscreen video studio is available for faculty to record videos for online content delivery. Prewritten scripts can be loaded into a teleprompter to make communicating material easy. Presenters can interact with and annotate slides or images through a tablet, adding an extra level of engagement with the audience. The studio has professional lighting and sound treatment so as to create the best looking and sounding video possible. All filming is done by ACMS’s video specialists who know how to frame shots properly so faculty can focus on their material instead of the technical aspects of production.
ACMS also offers postproduction editing services to create high quality finished videos. Our expert editors will create a seamless finished product that looks professional.
ACMS offers the innovative Learning Glass technique for creating engaging course videos. The Learning Glass allows an instructor to write on a transparent surface as if writing on a whiteboard while looking into the camera to keep the student's attention. These videos are produced with the same high standard as all of ACMS's video course content.
ACMS also supports faculty who want to make videos on their own. Faculty interested in recording their own videos from their home or office can receive training in Camtasia. Editing support for Camtasia videos is also available.
Once videos have been created, ACMS is available to help faculty upload and integrate their videos into Ted, UC San Diego’s learning management system.
