This is the agreement used by most departments for VMware software.
The VMware license is limited to use on UCSD owned computers. There is no minimum order. New licenses are perpetual but all licenses MUST be ordered with a minimum of 1 year "SnS" support services except the desktop computer virtualization software (Fusion, VMware Workstation). The prices are UC wide at about 10% under the educational list price. ALL SnS renewals must be done by getting a unique renewal quote for the specific serial numbers & support contract numbers desired.
Orders are handled by a "punch out" with the label "SHI" that will take you to the current UC system software reseller for this agreement via UCSD Marketplace.
By default this is a no media agreement with no tangible media (just downloads) and therefore no taxes. Most products are available for download on-line. Historically license codes can take time to arrive.
SnS is about 29% of the new full license cost per year and functionally a new license is purcahsed about every 4 years. (For budget planning cost considerations, when comparing to the free VirtualBox and Hyper-V or other Virtualization options).
Beginning with release 5, VMware only offers a 1 or 3 year term for SnS.
VMware utilizes a concept of pools of licenses sized on the amount of RAM consumed, and priced in multiples of CPU counts with a minimum of 1 license per physical processor. Each type and count of processor has a certain RAM space included. If you have a need to alocate more RAM than available you add additional processor licenses to the RAM license pool. you can not mix types of processor licenses (Standard with Enterprise Plus for instance). Each type has their own RAM license pool.
This applies to all licenses that are deployed at release 5 (or later) including release 4 licenses under SnS. So consider upgrades from earlier releases as fresh configurations when determining what you need.
