Directors

Academic Computing & Media Services is led by our directors, Tony Wood and Jeff Henry.

Audiovisual Design, Engineering, Installation, and Consulting

Services include AV system design, needs assessment, infrastructure design, electrical coordination, lighting zone and control recommendations, bid document creation, installation, project and construction management, AV system programming and commissioning, and quality assurance testing.

Business Office

Responsible for timekeeping, purchases, recharges. This office is also responsible for the programming and database support that underpins student email and computing account creation and allocations.

Classroom Support

Media Services supports classroom instructional technology use by providing emergency technical assistance to faculty, and by maintaining and engineering classroom instructional technology systems that include media stations, projectors, document cameras, and microphones. Media Services also manages the Distance Learning Center at CLICS. In conjunction with the IWDC, they support academic podcasting, and Media Services partners with the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) to provide remote real-time captioning.

Computer Repair & Installation (CRI), Desktop Support, Network Installation

CRI provides computer repair, preventative maintenance and hardware upgrades for the UCSD community. Drop-off locations include the ACMS Help Desk (AP&M) and the UCSD Bookstore. Desktop Support provides similar services plus software and operating system-level troubleshooting onsite. CRI’s Network Installation group provides design, installation and troubleshooting from switch to port.

Help Desk & ResNet

Provides primary support for student email, network and ACMS application login support. The ACMS Help Desk is home to the Residential Networking group (ResNet), the team that assists students in residential housing with network registration and connection issues. UCSD students can also obtain virus removal help and wireless troubleshooting help at the Help Desk located in AP&M 1313.

Instructional Web Development Center (IWDC)

IWDC provides course websites to faculty through the campus learning management system (LMS), WebCT. They provide up to ten hours of tutoring per faculty member (per year). Other services include a campus blog service for departments, an instructional wiki and the campus academic podcasting service. The IWDC group also provides recharge web hosting and development, ranging from site redesigns to dynamic web applications.

Media Lab

Provides professional quality production facilities, equipment, and technical assistance to undergraduate students enrolled in official media production classes and graduate students using media in their research.

Media Services (Recharge)

Services range from videoconferencing to special event support. Video production services include webcasting, podcasting, editing and file compression. Other services include digital signage setup, equipment rental, photography and design. Media Services also provides engineering support to UCSD-TV and UCTV.

Microsupport

Microsupport manages campus computing labs in 131 locations. Labs range from Windows and OS X to dual Windows and Linux stations and software loads with office productivity and browsers to sophisticated scientific applications and computerized instrumentation labs. Responsible for the creation and maintenance of student Active Directory accounts.

Operations

Responsible for the ACMS computer room, backups, inventory and equipment installation. The Operations group audits ACMS computer labs daily and provides supplies and maintenance for peripherals, especially the 110+ ACMS printers.

Software Distribution

Offering software licenses to the UCSD community, including those negotiated for the UC system and at the campus level.

Sysstaff

Provides student email services including ACS-Webmail and spam filtering. Supports student file storage space, file drop service and student websites. Responsible for networking configuration of ACMS networking equipment including energy savings projects, such as Wake-on-LAN. Maintains UNIX-based workstations in ACMS computing labs, including a number of Linux-Windows dual boot machines. Enhances and maintains the ACMS computer lab infrastructure including numerous paper-saving projects such as the ‘no print cover page’ and no cover page for contiguous jobs.

User Services

Responsible for creation of student email accounts in concert with the Business Offices and User Services. Provides second tier support for instructional computing accounts. Organizes a group of student helpers, called Zebras for the referee shirts they wear on shift, who staff high traffic ACMS labs on evenings during the school year. Provide support for printing to the ACMS plotters.
